What does a taxi dispatcher do?

They are the control room: answering calls, entering bookings, deciding (or overseeing the software that decides) which driver takes each job, and keeping every job moving until drop-off. With automatic dispatch most allocation is done by the system, and the dispatcher handles exceptions and customers.

What checks do dispatchers need?

In England and Wales it depends on the council: 187 of the 289 councils in the DfT's 2026 survey required DBS checks for an operator's booking and dispatch staff, and 206 required operators to record which dispatcher handled each booking.[1]

What should you ask in a dispatcher interview?

Ask scenario questions: a driver is 15 minutes late for an airport pickup, what do you do? Two urgent calls arrive at once? A passenger reports a driver's behaviour? Listen for calm prioritising, clear communication and knowing when to escalate.

Frequently asked questions

Is a taxi dispatcher job hard?

It is busy and needs calm multitasking at peaks (Friday nights, bad weather, flight delays), but dispatch software that allocates routine jobs automatically leaves the dispatcher to handle the exceptions.

Can taxi dispatchers work from home?

With cloud dispatch software, yes, if your licence conditions allow bookings to be handled away from the operating centre; check them first.
