Taxi app development cost: build or white-label?

A taxi app is three products: a passenger app, a driver app and the dispatch system both talk to, plus payments and maps. Building means paying developers for all three and for every update after launch. A white-label app is existing software under your name for a monthly fee. Store accounts alone cost $99 a year (Apple) and $25 once (Google Play).

What does a taxi app need?

More than the screens a passenger sees. Each part below has to be built, hosted and kept working.

  • Passenger app: booking now or later, the price before booking, the car on a live map, notifications, payment, ratings.
  • Driver app: job offers with a timer, navigation hand-off, status buttons, a meter where allowed, receipts and earnings.
  • Dispatch console: the office view of bookings, the map, allocation rules, records and reports.
  • Payments: a card processor, refunds and payouts.
  • Maps and routing: addresses, distances and routes, usually paid per request to a maps provider.
  • Upkeep: operating system updates, store reviews for every release, security fixes and support.

Which taxi app costs can you not avoid?

Store accounts ($99 a year for the Apple Developer Program, $25 once for Google Play), card processing on every payment (Stripe's UK price is 1.5% + 20p for a standard UK card), maps and hosting usage, and someone's time for every update. With a custom build you also pay for the development itself and for each change afterwards.[1][2][3]

Should you build a taxi app or use a white-label one?

Build when the app itself is your business and you have a development team for the long run; use white-label when you run a fleet and want your name in front of passengers without owning the software. The question to ask a white-label supplier is what you get under your brand, who handles store submissions, and whether you can export your data if you leave.

With TaxiDex, your own branded passenger app (Android, on Google Play) is included in the per-driver price, and we build it with your logo and colours and handle the store submission; your drivers use the TaxiDex Driver app. See the passenger app, pricing and data portability.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a taxi app like Uber?

You can build similar features, but not copy another company's code, name or design, and the hard part is not the app but the dispatch, payments and upkeep behind it.

Is the TaxiDex passenger app on iPhone?

The passenger app is published for Android on Google Play.
