How do airports let taxis and private hire cars work?
Usually through one of three routes: a taxi rank for licensed taxis, sometimes with an airport permit or a concession; designated pick-up areas for pre-booked cars; and meet-and-greet in the terminal. Ask the airport which applies to your licence type and what it charges.
In England a private hire vehicle can only be pre-booked, so it cannot use a taxi rank; see hackney carriage vs private hire.
Which airport fees end up in taxi fares?
Several regulators build them into the published rates. Drivers may collect the $6 SFO pick-up fee from the passenger; Los Angeles adds $4 to every trip starting at LAX, with a $16.50 minimum and a $51.15 flat fare to Downtown; Miami-Dade adds $2 and sets a $15 minimum from MIA. In London, TfL's February 2025 paper recommended cutting the Heathrow rank extra from £2.00 to £1.60 and raising the Heathrow drop-off charge passed on in fares from £5.20 to £6.00.[1][2][3][4]
How do you win an airport contract?
Find out when the airport's taxi or transfer concession is next let and what it scores: fleet size, vehicle standards, wheelchair-accessible cars, customer service and reporting. Public bodies advertise contracts on Contracts Finder or Find a Tender; airport companies may run their own process.[5]
How do you run airport jobs well?
Price them as fixed zone-to-zone fares, follow each flight so pick-ups move with early and late landings, and give passengers a clear meeting point and the driver's details before they land.
TaxiDex flight tracking moves the pick-up time with the actual flight, and zones set fixed airport prices. More: why airport bookings should differ from city ones.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a special licence to pick up at an airport?
Your normal taxi or private hire licences still apply, and the airport may add its own permit or charge for using its pick-up areas.
Can a private hire car wait at an airport taxi rank?
Not in England and Wales: a private hire vehicle can only be pre-booked, while taxis can be hired at a rank or hailed.
