What licences does an Uber fleet owner need?
Usually not a booking licence, because the platform takes the bookings, but every car needs its vehicle licence. In England and Wales the vehicle must be licensed by the same authority that issued the driver's licence. In New South Wales an owner whose cars carry bookings from an authorised booking service provider does not need its own authorisation, and in Queensland each booked hire vehicle needs a booked hire service licence of its own.[1][2][3]
What does a Queensland booked hire vehicle need?
A booked hire service licence (BHSL) for the vehicle, which costs $294.50 for one year from 1 July 2026, cannot be renewed or transferred, and lasts 12 months. Holders and drivers must be affiliated with an authorised booking entity, and processing takes 5 to 20 business days.[3][4]
What should the driver agreement say?
Who pays for what (rent, fuel, insurance excess, cleaning, fines), how much and how often, mileage limits, what happens after damage, and how either side ends the arrangement. Make the arrangement match how the work really happens, because employment status follows the reality.[5]

Will a car earn more than it costs?
Work it out per car per week: the rent or fare share you collect, minus finance or depreciation, insurance, licensing, servicing and the weeks a car stands empty between drivers. The empty weeks are what most often turn a profitable spreadsheet into a loss.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an operator licence to rent cars to Uber drivers?
In England and Wales, not for renting alone, because the platform holds the operator licence that takes the bookings; each car still needs a private hire vehicle licence.
Can I drive one of my fleet cars myself?
Yes, with a driver licence from the same authority that licensed the car, and on the platform's own terms.
