Should you buy, finance, lease or rent a taxi?
Each moves the cost and the risk to a different place.
| Option | Who owns the car | Upfront | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy outright | You | Full price | Cash tied up; you keep the resale value |
| Hire purchase or loan | You, once paid off | Deposit | Total amount payable, not just the monthly payment |
| Lease | The finance company | Usually a few payments in advance | Mileage limits, return condition, whether taxi use is allowed |
| Weekly rent of a licensed car | The rental firm | Deposit | Rent against what the car earns; who pays for repairs and insurance excess |
Why do council age limits matter for taxi finance?
Because a car that the council stops licensing has no working value left, even if you are still paying for it. In the DfT's 2026 survey about 2 in 3 councils set an age limit for taxis, and about 3 in 5 set an emission standard. Match the finance term to the years the car can be licensed.[1]
Your council's rules are on its licensing page; ours are summarised for Birmingham, Leeds and other areas under taxi licensing.
Where can a taxi business borrow?
Vehicle finance is secured on the car; general business loans are not. In the US, SBA microloans of up to $50,000 are made through non-profit intermediary lenders, which set the terms and make the credit decisions.[2]
When does renting a licensed car make sense?
When you are testing demand or adding drivers quickly: the car is already licensed and insured for hire, and you hand it back if the work dries up. Over a long period you pay more than the car would cost to finance, so compare the weekly rent with what the car earns.
The other side of this business is starting a PCO car rental business.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get taxi finance with no deposit?
Ask lenders directly, and compare the total amount payable rather than the monthly payment; a no-deposit deal usually costs more in total.
Is leasing a taxi allowed?
Only if the lease permits hire and reward use; check the agreement and your insurer before you license a leased car.
