Do taxi receipts need to show VAT?
Only if the business is VAT-registered: then its invoices must include its VAT number and show the VAT separately. Registration becomes compulsory when taxable turnover passes £90,000 in 12 months; below that, a receipt can simply show the fare.[1][3]
How do app bookings handle receipts?
A dispatch system can email or text a receipt automatically when the job is completed, with the route, times, fare breakdown, driver and vehicle, which saves paper and answers expense questions later.
The TaxiDex driver app issues a receipt for every job, and customer notifications send it to the passenger.
Frequently asked questions
What should be on a taxi receipt?
Company name and contact, date and times, pickup and destination, fare and extras, total, payment method, driver or vehicle identification, and the VAT number and VAT amount if the business is VAT-registered.
How long should a taxi business keep receipts?
In the UK self-employed people must keep business records for at least 5 years after the 31 January submission deadline of the relevant tax year.
Can I give a passenger a handwritten receipt?
Yes, if it carries the details above; many firms use printed receipt books or send receipts from their dispatch system instead.
