Taxi licensing

How long does it take to get a taxi licence?

Plan for about two months or more for a new driver, mainly because GOV.UK says enhanced DBS checks usually take around 8 weeks; the medical, knowledge and English tests and any training course are booked alongside it. Vehicle licences follow once the car passes inspection. Drivers on the DBS Update Service avoid a new DBS wait at renewal.

What happens, in the order that saves time

  1. 1

Start the enhanced DBS check first

It is the longest single wait, so apply as soon as the council lets you.[1]

  2. 2

    Book the medical

GOV.UK lists a medical examination among the usual requirements; your council's form says which standard and which doctor.[4]

  3. 3

Book the knowledge and English tests

Study the council's pack while the DBS check runs, and book the first available test date.

  4. 4

    Complete required training

Safeguarding, disability awareness or customer care courses are common conditions.[3]

  5. 5

    Submit the application with everything

Councils such as Luton will not accept an application without every required document and the fee.[6]

  6. 6

    Licence the vehicle

Book the inspection once the car is insured for hire and reward.

Why does a taxi licence take so long?

Because it is several checks in a row, each run by someone else: the DBS check, a medical, the council's tests and training, and then the council's own review of the application. The enhanced DBS check alone usually takes around 8 weeks.[1]

How can I speed it up?

Apply for the DBS check first, join the DBS Update Service so future checks are instant online, book tests while you wait, and submit a complete application. For renewals, apply well before the licence expires.[2]

How long does a renewal take?

Usually less, especially for drivers on the DBS Update Service, which 248 of 289 councils required in 2026. Renewals still need a fresh HMRC tax check and any training the council has added since.[3][5]

Frequently asked questions

Can I work while my taxi licence application is pending?

No. You may not drive a taxi or private hire vehicle for hire until the licence is granted; doing so can be prosecuted.

How long does a private hire licence take in London?

TfL runs its own checks and assessments (topographical, English and SERU); allow for the enhanced DBS check and the assessments to be booked and passed.
